Eucalyptus oil is distilled from gum leaves and has been a standard Australian household item for well over a century. Most of what people use it for is cleaning, laundry, odour and fragrance — practical jobs around the house rather than anything medicinal.

1. Getting sticky residue off things
The classic. Label glue, sticker gunk, tape residue, price tags on gifts.
A few drops on a cloth, work it in for a minute, wipe off. It handles adhesive that soap and water won't touch, and it doesn't scratch. Test on plastics first — it can mark some finishes.
2. Laundry
A few drops in the wash. It's a long-standing Australian habit, particularly for towels, gym gear and anything that's been left damp in a bag.
It also helps with the smell of a load that has sat too long in the machine.
3. Wool wash
Eucalyptus oil in cold water is the traditional way to wash woollens in Australia, and it's still what a lot of people use for jumpers and blankets that would shrink in a normal wash.
4. Freshening a mattress or soft furnishing
Diluted in water in a spray bottle, misted lightly over a mattress, lounge or car seat and left to dry. Enough to lift a stale smell without soaking anything.
5. Floors and surfaces
A few drops in a bucket of warm water. It cuts grease reasonably well and leaves a clean smell that isn't synthetic.
Avoid it neat on sealed timber and check any waxed surface first.
6. Bins and drains
Straight down the kitchen bin after emptying, or into the drain. Mostly an odour job.
7. In a diffuser or a bowl of hot water

8. Removing chewing gum

- Never swallow it. Eucalyptus oil is toxic if ingested and small amounts can seriously harm a child. This is the big one — keep it locked away, not under the sink.
- Dilute for skin contact. Neat oil irritates.
- Keep it away from babies and young children, including in diffusers and around cots.
- Toxic to pets, particularly cats and dogs.
- Don't use it near a flame. It's flammable.
- Ventilate when you're cleaning with it. The smell is strong for a reason.
